Synopsis

In a bid to boost revenue, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has issued recovery notices to 35 major defaulters owing INR 3.6 crore, as part of a wider drive covering 69 defaulters with total dues of INR 18.2 crore. So far, MCG has collected INR 232.9 crore of its INR 275 crore property tax target for FY 2025-26. A 10% rebate is being offered for full payments made by July-end, along with a No-Dues Certificate. Delays may attract 18% annual interest, sealing, or even auction of properties. Help desks have been set up to address issues like fake receipts, ID mismatches, and data verification.

In a strong move to boost property tax collection, Gurugram's civic body has sent recovery notices to 35 high-value defaulters who collectively owe around INR 3.6 crore. These notices are part of a wider enforcement initiative launched in the past week, during which 69 defaulters with combined dues of INR 18.2 crore were also targeted. The move comes as the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) works to bridge the gap between its revenue target and actual collections.

Currently, MCG has managed to collect INR 232.9 crore in property tax revenue, achieving nearly 77 percent of its INR 275 crore goal for the current financial year. This target was revised down from INR 300 crore last year. Since property tax remains a major income source for the municipal body alongside stamp duty such collection drives are critical to maintain urban services and fund development work.

To encourage timely payments, the Haryana government is offering a 10 percent discount on the total tax amount for the financial year 2025-26. This rebate is applicable only if property owners clear their dues in full and obtain a No-Dues Certificate online or from citizen facilitation centres by the end of July. MCG officials are also urging property owners to self-certify their tax data to avoid complications and verify their records using the official portal.

Taxpayers have been warned of serious repercussions in case of delay or refusal to pay. An annual 18?percent interest will be levied on outstanding amounts. In extreme cases, defaulters properties may be sealed or auctioned under the Haryana Municipal Corporation Act.

The civic body is also tackling other challenges such as fake property tax receipts issued by unauthorised agents and property ID mismatches that often result in tax evasion. To assist citizens in correcting records and resolving objections, help desks and zonal offices are providing on-ground support.

As part of a broader strategy, MCG is moving zone-wise, focusing on large residential colonies, commercial hubs, and institutional premises to close in on long-time defaulters and update property databases in real-time.
