Synopsis

The Uttar Pradesh government has unveiled plans to develop Kanpur into a major electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing hub, backed by an investment of INR 700 crore. Under the Kanpur Metropolitan Development Vision- 2030, a 500-acre high-tech EV park will be set up near Bhimsen by UPSIDA via a Public-Private Partnership model. The park will house production units for motors, chassis, lithium-ion cells, and EV components, along with a dedicated R&D centre. Positioned along the dedicated freight corridor, the site offers strong logistics advantages. A complementary EV components cluster will support SMEs, driving innovation, job creation, and strengthening India's EV supply chain.

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced its intention to position Kanpur as a prominent electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing hub, with an anticipated investment of approximately INR 700 crore earmarked for the development of a large-scale EV park.

As part of the Kanpur Metropolitan Development Vision - 2030, the Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Authority (UPSIDA) is tasked with establishing the high-tech park over 500 acres of land near Bhimsen, strategically located along the dedicated freight corridor. Officials indicated that the project would be implemented through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework, aiming to elevate Kanpur's role in India's fast-growing EV ecosystem.

The initiative is primarily focused on fortifying the local supply chain for EVs and enhancing domestic manufacturing capabilities. The proposed park will accommodate production facilities for electric motors, vehicle chassis, steel components, and lithium-ion cells. Additional infrastructure will support the assembly of lithium-ion batteries, EV chargers, controllers, and a wide array of electronic components.

A critical component of the project is a dedicated research and development (R&D) centre. Authorities noted that this facility would foster innovation and advanced product design, thereby contributing both to regional technological progress and to broader global EV developments.

Officials expressed confidence that beyond transforming Kanpur into a manufacturing hub, the EV park would serve as a powerful driver of economic expansion within the state. In parallel with the park's construction, an integrated EV components cluster is being developed. This cluster is designed to empower small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to engage in parts and component manufacturing, paving the way for increased entrepreneurial activity and substantial job creation.

The park's location along the dedicated freight corridor provides it with a distinct logistical edge. Its connectivity to robust road and rail networks will ensure efficient transportation of both raw materials and finished products, adding further operational value to the venture.

By combining manufacturing scale, research capabilities, and SME support within a logistics-optimised location, the initiative not only reinforces local industrial self-reliance but also amplifies India's broader EV mission. If successfully executed, this venture is poised to make Kanpur a pivotal node in the global EV value chain.
