The Maharashtra government has signed an MoU with Max Aerospace and Aviation to set up a INR 8,000 crore helicopter manufacturing unit in Nagpur. Work on the project is slated to begin in 2026, with the initiative expected to create around 2,000 jobs. This will be Maharashtra's first facility for complete helicopter production, marking a major milestone in India's defence manufacturing drive. The unit will incorporate global technology for integration, testing, and customisation of rotary-wing aircraft. Strategically located near Nagpur airport, the plant supports 'Make in India' and 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' goals, boosting both local infrastructure and aerospace self-reliance.
The Maharashtra government has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Max Aerospace and Aviation Pvt Ltd for the establishment of a state-of-the-art helicopter manufacturing unit in Nagpur. The agreement, signed last week, outlines an estimated investment of around INR 8,000 crore over a span of eight years. The initiative is expected to generate approximately 2,000 jobs, both direct and indirect, according to a statement issued by the chief minister's office.
The MoU was formalised in the presence of Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis, who remarked that the initiative would significantly strengthen the defence manufacturing ecosystem in Nagpur. As per the agreement, Max Aerospace will commence work on the facility from 2026.
This project marks Maharashtra's first venture into helicopter customisation and end-to-end production, positioning the state as a key contributor to India's aerospace ambitions. The development aligns with the central government's flagship campaigns such as 'Make in India' and 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat', aiming to reduce dependency on foreign imports in the defence sector.
According to the official statement, the manufacturing plant will employ advanced global technology and serve as a Centre of Excellence for the integration, flight testing, and customisation of rotary-wing aircraft. Strategically situated near Nagpur airport, the plant will benefit from robust infrastructure and logistics, contributing further to India's growing aerospace supply chain.
Fadnavis expressed his satisfaction with Max Aerospace's decision to establish the unit in Nagpur and noted that the city had already developed commendable infrastructure for the defence sector. He assured that the state government would extend complete support to the company and emphasised the importance of adhering to the planned timeline for production commencement.
The partnership is being seen as a transformative step in Maharashtra's industrial landscape and a progressive stride towards India's self-reliance in defence production.
