Flood risk is rising in parts of Nagpur-especially Pardi, Punapur, Kalamna, Wanjra, Wathoda, and Narsala-due to incomplete retaining walls along the Nag, Pili, and Pora rivers. Despite a INR 57 crore proposal under Maharashtra's flood mitigation program receiving in-principle approval, funds remain unreleased. Of an earlier INR 204.72 crore allocation, only INR 86.63 crore has been disbursed, stalling critical construction and contractor payments. Recent rains have already caused waterlogging, and a 2023 wall collapse near Ambazari dam sparked major damage and public outcry. The Nagpur civic body has appealed to the divisional commissioner, while residents have moved the Bombay High Court to demand urgent action.
Several parts of Nagpur, particularly in the north, east, and south regions, are facing a growing flood risk as crucial retaining walls along rivers remain incomplete. Areas such as Pardi, Punapur, Kalamna, Wanjra, Wathoda, and Narsala have been marked as high-risk zones due to the absence of protective structures along the Nag, Pili, and Pora rivers.
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation had submitted a proposal for INR 57 crore under the state's flood mitigation program. Although the proposal received in-principle approval from the state government, the funds have not yet been released. As a result, construction work has not progressed in key stretches where retaining walls are urgently needed.
Under an earlier sanctioned amount of INR 204.72 crore, INR 163.23 crore was specifically allocated for riverbank protection measures. So far, only INR 86.63 crore has been disbursed. With INR 70.26 crore still pending, many parts of the city continue to face delays in construction and payments to contractors.
The lack of retaining walls has already led to waterlogging in several areas, even after short spells of rainfall. In September 2023, heavy rain caused major damage near the Nag river and Ambazari dam area, where a retaining wall collapsed, submerging residential colonies and triggering strong public backlash.
In response to the continued delay, the Nagpur civic body has approached the divisional commissioner, seeking immediate release of the remaining funds. At the same time, affected residents have taken legal steps by approaching the Bombay High Court's Nagpur bench, asking the court to direct authorities to act before the situation worsens during peak monsoon.
