Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has taken strong action against public space encroachments, penalising 4,890 individuals and contractors for leaving construction materials like sand and debris on footpaths and roads. The six-month campaign, led by Commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari, covered all ten city zones and collected INR 1.16 crore in fines-INR 93.16 lakh from individuals and INR 23.20 lakh from builders. Laxmi Nagar saw the most violations. Under civic rules, materials left in public areas must be cleared within 48 hours or face fines of INR 2,000 (residents) and INR 10,000 (builders). Additionally, over 7,000 were fined for blocking roads with temporary structures. The drive aims to reclaim safe, usable public spaces.
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation has intensified its action against encroachments on public property, particularly targeting the rampant practice of leaving construction materials such as sand, gravel, bricks, and debris on footpaths, internal roads, and open plots. In a systematic six-month campaign spanning all ten administrative zones of the city, NMC penalized 4,658 individual residents and 232 construction contractors, together amounting to 4,890 offenders.
These violations fall under the breach of civic space use regulations, which mandate that any construction material left in a public area must be cleared within 48 hours. Upon failure to comply, fines are automatically levied. The standard penalty has been fixed at INR 2,000 for individual residents and INR 10,000 for builders.
The drive, monitored directly by Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari, yielded a total fine collection of approximately INR 1.16 crore. Of this, INR 93.16 lakh was recovered from individuals, while INR 23.20 lakh came from contractors. The exercise has been one of the largest of its kind undertaken in recent years and signals a shift towards stricter urban management by the NMC.
Among the ten zones, Laxmi Nagar recorded the highest number of violations, with 939 residents and 69 builders penalized. The fines collected from this zone alone exceeded INR 25 lakh. Other zones with significant numbers of offences included Dharampeth, Dhantoli, Mangalwari, Hanuman Nagar, Nehrunagar, Gandhibagh, Lakadganj, Satranjipura, and Ashinagar.
In a parallel action over the same period, the civic body had also fined over 7,000 individuals for obstructing roads with temporary structures like wedding tents and ceremonial arches collecting INR 79 lakh in those cases. These moves aim to reclaim public spaces and ensure safety and accessibility for pedestrians and vehicles, particularly as construction activity in the city continues to rise.
