Synopsis

Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor Dipak Majumder yesterday reviewed development work at the Lake Chowmuhani Bazaar, a long-standing and unique vegetable market in Agartala. The Mayor promised modern facilities and technological integrations as part of a broader urban upgrade initiative. This project aims to transform the historic market into a well-planned space, ensuring dignity and ease of business for its small-scale vendors. The modernization is part of a larger city master plan to enhance urban living and address past challenges like encroachments, aiming for sustainable market development and economic empowerment for local traders.

In a move aimed at revitalizing one of Agartala's oldest and most distinctive vegetable markets, Mayor Dipak Majumder of the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) yesterday conducted an inspection of Lake Chowmuhani Bazaar. This market is particularly known for its diverse supply of special and rare varieties of vegetables, holding a unique place in the city's commercial and cultural fabric.

Speaking about his visit, Mayor Dipak Majumder stated that he had been to Lake Chowmuhani Market to assess the progress of ongoing development work. He explained that the goal was to transform this historic market into a well-planned and aesthetically pleasing space, ensuring that all small-scale vendors could conduct their business with ease and dignity. The Mayor emphasized that construction work is proceeding rapidly, and its completion will significantly enhance both the efficiency and comfort of market operations for traders and consumers alike.

Mayor Majumder also highlighted that the new infrastructure would incorporate modern technological integrations. These advancements are intended to support smarter business management practices and improve the overall experience for both traders and shoppers. This initiative is a component of a broader urban upgrade plan undertaken by the AMC, designed to promote sustainable market development and foster economic empowerment for local vendors. The AMC has recently unveiled a "Greater Agartala" expansion plan, a comprehensive master plan designed to guide the city's growth over the next two decades, and the market redevelopment is a key part of this vision.

The Mayor's visit and the ongoing development efforts come after past challenges faced by the market, including issues with encroachments and traffic congestion, which had prompted earlier inspections and eviction drives by the municipal corporation. During these previous efforts, temporary arrangements, such as a planned temporary shed for about 130 small vendors, were considered to ensure continued livelihoods during construction. The current initiative represents a renewed push towards scientifically redesigning major market zones under AMC's jurisdiction to enhance comfort and resolve chronic traffic issues in key trading areas.
