Vanya Steels, a subsidiary of South India's prominent integrated steelmaker A-One Steel Group, is investing INR 100 crore to establish a 10 MW waste-to-energy captive power plant at its manufacturing unit in Koppal, Karnataka. The project, which is scheduled for commissioning by the end of July 2025, will utilise advanced Waste Heat Recovery Boiler (WHRB) technology to convert residual heat from steel production into clean electricity. This initiative is expected to enhance energy efficiency, reduce operational costs, cut carbon emissions, and support India's broader goals of self-reliant and sustainable industrial growth.
Vanya Steels, a key unit under A-One Steel Group, has embarked on a major sustainability-led infrastructure project with a capital investment of INR 100 crore. The company is in the process of setting up a 10 MW waste-to-energy captive power plant at its existing production facility in Koppal, Karnataka. The project is slated for completion and commissioning by the end of July 2025.
The facility will be powered by advanced Waste Heat Recovery Boiler (WHRB) technology, enabling the conversion of high-temperature waste gases generated during steelmaking into a stable source of green electricity. This initiative marks a strategic shift towards more resource-efficient manufacturing within the Indian steel sector, particularly in the southern region.
Krishan Kumar Jallan, the Founder and Chairman of A-One Steel Group, said the project underscores the company's commitment to responsible industrial practices and energy self-reliance. He explained that this WHRB-based system will tap into heat energy typically lost during the steel production process, repurposing it to generate clean power that will be consumed internally. This transition to captive energy usage is anticipated to significantly reduce reliance on grid electricity, bringing down overall energy costs and cutting carbon emissions.
Jallan also noted that such a system doesn't just enhance operational efficiency but adds long-term resilience to the company's supply chain and energy planning. He highlighted the role this project plays in supporting India's Aatma Nirbhar Bharat vision, stating that adopting cleaner manufacturing technologies not only benefits the environment but also enhances competitiveness and community support at the local level.
Vanya Steels, known for manufacturing high-grade sponge iron a crucial input in the production of steel-has been instrumental in bolstering A-One Steel Group's capacity across southern India. The parent group is one of the region's largest integrated steel producers, with a strong focus on infrastructure-led expansion, value-added production, and sustainability-driven investments.
With this new plant, the group aims to reduce its carbon footprint, enhance energy security, and set a benchmark for sustainable practices within the Indian steel sector. The project will also likely serve as a model for other industrial players seeking to integrate waste-to-energy solutions into their operations.
