Synopsis

The Gujarat government has intensified road repair and patchwork efforts following heavy monsoon rains that severely impacted infrastructure across the state. Under the direction of Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel, the Roads and Buildings Department is prioritising quick restoration of roads to avoid public inconvenience. So far, over 50% of both minor and major patchwork has been completed, with more than 62% of pothole-filling works also accomplished. With more than 183 roads affected by diversions, structural repairs and traffic restoration efforts are underway in multiple areas.

In response to extensive damage caused by recent heavy monsoon rains, the Gujarat government has fast-tracked road repair and maintenance efforts throughout the state. Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel instructed the Roads and Buildings Department to urgently address the deteriorating condition of roads, aiming to minimise disruption for citizens and ensure smoother transportation in the coming weeks.

The state government reported that out of 1,893 km of roads requiring minor patchwork, work on 957 km equivalent to 51% has been completed. Similarly, from a total of 1,074 km needing major patchwork, 425 km have already been repaired. Authorities noted that repair efforts are being carried out with urgency and are progressing on a priority basis across affected zones.

In terms of pothole-filling, officials confirmed that 8,841 out of 14,169 identified potholes over 62% have been addressed. The materials used for these repairs include concrete (243 potholes), paver blocks (138), metal (5,480), and asphalt (2,840), indicating a multi-pronged strategy based on the location and severity of the damage.

Gujarat's road network spans over 1.19 lakh kilometres, encompassing state highways, national highways, panchayat roads, and capital project routes. With such a vast network under strain, the state has also implemented diversions on 183 roads where structural damage or waterlogging has disrupted normal flow. Quality inspections have been completed on 154 of these diverted routes, and structural restoration work has been finalised on 12 of them. Additionally, three alternative roads have been constructed, enabling resumed traffic on several previously closed routes.

The Roads and Buildings Department stated that 98 diversions remain in satisfactory condition, while 41 are undergoing active repair work. The department continues to carry out precautionary checks and accelerate maintenance operations to mitigate the impact of further rainfall and keep essential connectivity intact.

Historically, Gujarat's infrastructure has faced similar challenges during monsoon spells. In past years, delays in post-rain maintenance had led to prolonged traffic snarls and safety hazards. This year, the government appears to be taking a more proactive stance.
