Synopsis

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans to bid out 124 highway and expressway projects valued at INR 3.4 lakh crore in FY26. This initiative aims to address a slowdown in awards and build developer confidence. Nearly 78% of these projects will be offered under a Public-Private Partnership model, with the rest government-funded. Notable projects include the Gorakhpur-Kishangan-Siliguri highway and the Patna-Purnea stretch. NHAI has made the full project list public to prepare developers for this revitalization of India's road infrastructure.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has recently announced its plan to offer numerous highway and expressway projects for bidding. This initiative, impacting the nation's road infrastructure in the current financial year, aims to address a recent slowdown in project awards and boost development by making a list of projects public to invite proposals from developers.

NHAI plans to bid out 124 highway and expressway projects. These projects collectively are valued at INR 3.4 lakh crore. This initiative aims to address a slowdown in project awards that occurred over the past two years, which had created uncertainty among highway developers.

The slowdown was partly attributed to the halt of the government's Bharatmala programme and a new policy requiring 90% land availability before opening bids. A significant portion, nearly 78%, of these projects will be offered under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode. The remaining projects will be fully government-funded.

Notable projects in this pipeline include the Gorakhpur-Kishangan-Siliguri highway, which spans 476 kilometers and is valued at INR 35,000 crore. The Patna-Purnea stretch, measuring 282 kilometers, is valued at INR 17,076 crore. Additionally, two packages of the Nashik-Ahmednagar highway, totaling 374 kilometers, are valued at over INR 19,000 crore.

NHAI has made the entire list of projects public to inform and prepare highway developers. This strategic move is intended to revitalize infrastructure development in India's road sector and instill confidence among developers. Project awards in the infrastructure sector are important for economic growth and employment.
