Synopsis

Maharashtra Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis is scheduled to hand over keys to the first 556 BDD flats in Worli, Mumbai, on July 21. These 500 sq ft homes are for tenants previously in transit accommodations as part of the BDD chawls redevelopment. MHADA, the nodal agency, expects to distribute 3,989 flats across three sites by year-end. Despite project delays leading to a INR 13 crore penalty for the contractor, authorities are keen to expedite rehabilitation, with occupancy certificates for the initial units expected soon.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis is scheduled to distribute keys to the first set of redeveloped flats on July 21. This event, taking place in Worli, Mumbai, marks a major step in a large-scale housing redevelopment project of BDD (Bombay Development Department) chawls.

The Chief Minister is scheduled to hand over the keys to the first 556 BDD flats, measuring 500 square feet each. These homes are intended for tenants who were previously relocated to transit accommodations, such as those at Srinivas and Century Mills in Parel.

The Mumbai Board of MHADA (Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority), which is the nodal agency for the redevelopment project, expects to distribute a total of 3,989 flats across three sites by the end of the year. The project has experienced delays ranging from two to eleven months for various wings.

MHADA has issued a notice to the project contractor, TCC Construction Company, for these delays, imposing a penalty of INR 13 crore. The D and E wings of Building No. 1, which comprise the 556 flats, are 40 storeys high. They have received necessary clearances like fire No-Objection Certificates (NOC), water, and electricity connections. An occupation certificate for these units is expected soon.

The redevelopment of old, government-built housing like the BDD chawls in Mumbai is a significant urban renewal initiative, aiming to provide better living conditions for long-term residents. Such projects often face complex challenges, including managing large-scale relocations and construction timelines.
