Kakinada SEZ Limited, an Auro Infra Realty subsidiary, is setting up a INR 1,310 crore, 3x50 MLD desalination plant in Kona Village, Kakinada District, Andhra Pradesh. An Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) recommended Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance on June 26. The plant will draw 380 MLD seawater and distribute product water to industries. Brine rejects of 230 MLD will go into the sea, but a condition requires developing a brine reuse prototype. This initiative aims to reduce freshwater load and groundwater tapping, with INR 10 crore for environmental mitigation.
Kakinada SEZ Limited, a subsidiary of Auro Infra Realty and Infrastructure, is establishing a new desalination plant in Kona Village, Kakinada District, Andhra Pradesh. This project, which involves an investment of INR 1,310 crore, aims to provide water to industries and the local port.
The plant will have a capacity of 3x50 Million Liters per Day (MLD). The Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) under the Ministry of Forests at the Centre recently recommended the proposal for Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance, adding specific conditions during a meeting on June 26. The desalination facility includes two seawater intake pipelines designed to draw 380 MLD from the sea. The treated water will then be distributed to industries and the port through various pipelines.
An outfall pipeline will carry 230 MLD of brine rejects from the desalination plant into the sea. As one of the conditions for CRZ clearance, the EAC stated that the company must assist in developing a prototype to reuse brine discharge, rather than releasing it directly into the sea, to reduce marine pollution. The company will provide funds to a university or research institute for this purpose and submit a report for monitoring and compliance.
The EAC noted that desalination water will help reduce the demand on freshwater resources in neighboring areas, significantly reducing groundwater use. A budget of INR 10 crore is set aside for environmental mitigation, monitoring, and protection measures for the project. The EAC also stipulated that any change in the scope of the project would require a fresh appraisal by the Ministry.
Kakinada SEZ was established to develop a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and Domestic Tariff Area (DTA), including an industrial city and township, within the Kakinada special economic zone. Desalination plants are increasingly used in coastal areas to address water scarcity, especially for industrial and urban needs.
