Synopsis

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started work on a 1.2 km stretch of the Coastal Road Project's second phase in Goregaon, Mumbai. This section lies outside the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ). The north phase of the project, connecting Versova to Bhayandar, encompasses elevated roads and twin tunnels, with most of its area within CRZ limits. The BMC recently received Stage 1 approvals for mangrove diversion and will now approach the High Court for working permissions before final environmental clearances.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has recently started work on a segment of the Coastal Road Project's second phase. This initiative, along a 1.2 kilometer stretch in Goregaon, Mumbai, aims to advance the major infrastructure project by commencing foundation work in an area outside a restricted zone. Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar conducted a site inspection on Wednesday to review developments.

The north phase of the Coastal Road Project is set to connect Versova in the western suburbs with the satellite city of Bhayandar. This project includes inter-tidals, elevated roads, and twin tunnels. While the 1.2 km stretch in Goregaon is outside the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) boundary, most of the overall project area passes through land and creeks, which fall under the CRZ.

Earlier this month, the BMC received initial (Stage I) approvals for a mangrove forest diversion proposal from the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC). Having obtained these Stage I approvals, the civic body will now approach the High Court for final working permissions.

Following this, the MoEFCC will grant Stage II (final) approvals for the project. The inspected Goregaon stretch falls under Package B of the project, which covers an overall area of 1.66 kilometers between Bangur Nagar and Mindspace, Malad. During his visit, Bangar instructed officials to ensure that no work is undertaken in areas categorized under CRZ.

Besides overseeing ongoing works at Goregaon, Bangar also conducted site visits at Versova, Andheri, Lokhandwala interchange, and Malad Mindspace. There, he interacted with officials and reviewed several works being executed under Coastal Road Phase 2. Large-scale coastal infrastructure projects often involve complex environmental clearances and phased construction.
