Synopsis

The BMC is considering developing a dedicated indoor event space near the Mahalaxmi Racecourse stables in Mumbai, encouraged by a INR 7.5 crore revenue boost from recent events. The proposed 15-acre facility would host cultural and corporate events, especially during monsoons. This initiative follows BMC taking possession of 120.1 acres of the 212.7-acre racecourse plot last year. Officials also discussed mapping underground utilities and coordinating a pedestrian tunnel to the Metro 3 station, ensuring development without disrupting horse racing.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has recently put forth a proposal to develop a dedicated indoor event space. This idea, discussed on Tuesday evening at the BMC headquarters, aims to address needs at the Mahalaxmi Racecourse in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The BMC is considering this development near the horse stables, driven by revenue generated from hosting events and the need for year-round facilities.

The BMC's idea is encouraged by a INR 7.5 crore revenue increase from hosting major events at Mahalaxmi Racecourse over the past year. Civic officials discussed developing a 15-acre land parcel near the horse stables for closed-door cultural, music, and corporate events. A civic official privy to the discussions stated that while a portion of the open space is currently rented out during summer and winter, hosting events during the monsoon months is not preferred.

Of the total 212.7-acre racecourse plot, BMC took possession of 120.1 acres, including general open space and the smaller open ground near the stables, on July 2, 2024. The remaining 92.6 acres were leased back to the Royal Western India Turf Club Ltd for 30 years, from June 1, 2023, to May 31, 2053, subject to specific terms and usage conditions.

At Tuesday's meeting, civic officials were also instructed to begin mapping all underground utility lines, including stormwater drains, sewerage, and water pipelines. This mapping aims to enable further development of the 120-acre racecourse land without disrupting horse racing activities. Plans include constructing portions of the new infrastructure one level below ground.

Officials from the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd also attended the meeting and coordinated the proposed pedestrian tunnel that would connect the racecourse with the underground Acharya Atre Chowk Metro 3 station. Architect Hafeez Contractor's team, which is assisting BMC in designing the open space, was also present at the meeting.

A civic official confirmed that the 120-acre space will remain open, and efforts are being made to ensure that any design does not impact the horse racing ground. Addition to the existing parking facility was also discussed, and another meeting will be held soon to advance these plans. Urban spaces like racecourses in dense cities can be used for multiple purposes.
