Synopsis

Work on the INR 694 crore Goregaon creek bridge, a 512-meter, 3+3 lane project, is expected to begin around August. Approved by BMC in 2022, the bridge will connect Andheri West and Goregaon West, offering an alternative to New Link Road. The project faced delays due to environmental clearances in CRZ areas and over 2,500 slum tenements in its path. Despite recent court approvals, a Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) project needs to clear homes on the Goregaon side. Felling 31 mangroves is planned, with 444 new ones as compensation.

An additional bridge project connecting Mumbai's western suburbs is set to begin construction after years of delays. Work is expected to start around August on the Goregaon creek bridge, which aims to improve connectivity and ease traffic congestion between Andheri West and Goregaon West, following various permissions now being in place.

The bridge is estimated to cost INR 694 crore in total, with a contract cost of INR 499.2 crore. It will span 512 meters and feature 3+3 lanes. The bridge aims to connect Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar in Goregaon West over the Goregaon Creek to Millat Nagar in Andheri West, also known as Masjid Us Salam Chowk. This will offer an alternative to the often-congested New Link Road, improving travel between Andheri, Oshiwara, Lokhandwala, and Goregaon. The project's deadline is August 2029.

The bridge was initially approved by the BMC in 2022. Its path goes through multiple Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) and No Development Zone (NDZ) areas due to mangroves, marshy areas, and a creek. This required a series of permissions from authorities. The Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) gave its clearance in May 2023. This was conditional on abiding by the CRZ Notification, 2019, and building the bridge on stilts to reduce its impact on mangroves. It also warned against encroachment and solid waste dumping affecting creek water flow.

The Bombay High Court (HC) granted prior permission in 2024, confirming no mangrove buffer zones. In May 2025, the court gave its approval, stating the bridge serves public interest. For environmental mitigation, 31 mangroves would need to be felled, for which the BMC plans to plant 444 mangroves as compensatory afforestation.

While most permissions are now in place, over 2,500 slum tenements stand in the way on the Goregaon side. Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar, who visited the site on Wednesday, stated that excavation work on the Andheri West side will start around August. On the Goregaon side, where the slums are located, an SRA (Slum Rehabilitation Authority) project is ongoing.
