Synopsis

Authorities in Gautam Buddh Nagar have initiated a comprehensive safety protocol around the under-construction Noida International Airport, aiming to address threats from illegal buildings, waste mismanagement, and wildlife presence within a 10-km radius. The Airport Environment Management Committee (AEMC), led by District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma, has mandated regular inspections, drainage improvements, and prohibition of unauthorised drone and laser activity. These interventions are deemed critical to ensure safe operations at the greenfield airport project in Jewar, which is nearing the start of its first phase after missing its earlier timeline.

To address multiple operational and environmental hazards near the Noida International Airport project site in Jewar, the Gautam Buddh Nagar administration has directed stringent measures to ensure safety and regulatory compliance in the vicinity. Concerns were raised during a meeting of the Airport Environment Management Committee (AEMC), chaired by District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma and attended by senior officials from the district administration and airport development authorities.

Verma instructed that illegal constructions within a 10-kilometre radius of the airport be identified and dealt with through legal proceedings, including demolitions. He highlighted how unregulated structures, open garbage dumping, and the presence of birds and animals posed significant risks to flight safety. Regular monthly inspections have been mandated in coordination with AEMC, with concerned departments ordered to submit reports to the chairperson.

To prevent waterlogging and related issues, the district magistrate called for strengthening of all drainage systems. The formation of a dedicated survey team was approved to monitor unauthorised buildings, while departments were also tasked with managing cleanliness and waste disposal to reduce the attraction of wildlife.

Kiran Jain, Chief Operating Officer of Noida International Airport, delivered a presentation outlining the environmental and operational threats observed within the critical 10-kilometre airport zone. In response, Verma proposed a joint survey initiative and the formation of an obstacle clearance committee to tackle potential obstructions.

Additional directives included the prohibition of laser emitters and drones in the vicinity unless authorised by a valid No Objection Certificate (NOC). The administration has also been instructed to raise awareness among rural populations about the hazards of unauthorised equipment usage in restricted airspace.

The airport is a greenfield public-private partnership (PPP) initiative located roughly 70 km from Delhi?s Connaught Place. Currently, the project is in the final stages of preparing for its phase-one launch, which was initially targeted for September 2024 but is now expected to commence slightly later than scheduled.

While the airport nears partial commissioning, the authorities are treating the surrounding environment with equal priority, seeking to eliminate risks from urban sprawl, waste mismanagement, and unregulated activities. These developments underscore the critical role of coordinated governance and proactive monitoring as India scales up its airport infrastructure.
