Synopsis

In a focused effort to support the unorganized sector, over 12,000 construction workers in Kodagu district in Karnataka have now been registered with the state's Construction Workers Welfare Board. This registration grants them access to a wide range of government-backed benefits, including financial assistance for children's education, medical treatments, pensions, maternity care, disability support, and funeral expenses. Marriage grants and aid for preschool nutrition are also available. The district's labour department is pushing for clean, genuine enrolment especially after earlier state-wide concerns around fraudulent claims and underutilized welfare funds. The initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure construction workers receive the entitlements they're due.

In Kodagu district, the state labour department has brought over 12,000 construction workers under the umbrella of the Karnataka Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board. These workers, who often fall through the cracks of formal welfare systems, are now entitled to a suite of benefits aimed at improving their health, financial stability, and family welfare.

According to district labour officials, the registered workers are eligible for medical assistance, accident-related compensation, pensions, maternity benefits, educational aid for their children, and funeral support. The education benefits cover two children per worker, from pre-school all the way up to postgraduate studies helping families secure a stronger future.

The scheme also offers aid for heart disease, kidney ailments, cancer treatments, neurosurgery, dialysis, ENT procedures, and eye care. Maternity benefits are offered for the first two deliveries, while financial assistance for marriage and an annual sum for preschool nutrition (through anganwadis) are also part of the welfare package.

Workers who have held registration for at least three years and are over 60 years of age qualify for monthly pensions. In case of a pensioner's death, their spouse or family is provided with continued financial support. Toolkits are supplied to assist workers in their daily professional activities-ensuring they can improve or sustain their livelihood.

The labour department, which administers 23 labour laws and has had a presence in the district since 1954, has intensified its outreach to ensure eligible workers are made aware of the scheme. Officials have also been working to avoid misuse of benefits, especially following earlier concerns across Karnataka about fake applications and delays in disbursing scholarship aid.

In a previous initiative launched across the state, the Karnataka government announced INR 3,000 in financial assistance to approximately 1.5 million registered construction workers. This was aimed at cushioning workers during challenging economic conditions and underlined the government's intent to ramp up direct welfare delivery.

In Kodagu, officials have clarified that registrations are being verified diligently, and only those who meet eligibility criteria are being enrolled. Labour department representatives stated that the intent is to ensure the system supports the right people-and to avoid the mistakes seen in other districts where lax oversight led to misuse.
