A villa outside Paris, formerly owned by late fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld, was sold for EUR 4.7 million at a recent auction. The property, spanning two hectares with multiple houses, a pool, and a tennis court, was acquired by Lagerfeld in 2010 and abandoned after his death in 2019. The sale, conducted via a unique "candle auction" method, follows another high-value property sale of his earlier in the year. The transactions highlight continued interest in properties linked to iconic figures, even years after their passing.
A villa outside Paris, formerly owned by late fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld, was sold at auction on June 1. This property, in Louveciennes, west of Paris, was part of the liquidation of his estate and went through a unique auction method.
The villa fetched EUR 4.7 million. The sale was conducted using a traditional "candle auction" method, common in France. In this method, the exact sale time is determined by the burning of two small candles, each lasting about fifteen seconds. Lagerfeld purchased the villa in Louveciennes in 2010. The property was abandoned after his death in 2019. In 2023, a real estate company acquired the house.
The property is situated in a two-hectare, or five-acre, park and includes three separate houses, a swimming pool, and a tennis court. It is designed for "discretion and anonymity" with surrounding trees and walls. Lagerfeld's studio occupied a significant portion of the first floor of the main house.
According to Arias, the firm handling the sale, Lagerfeld undertook extensive renovation work on the property. This villa previously belonged to the 19th-century poet Leconte de Lisle and members of the Rothschild family. The estimated cost of Lagerfeld's renovations was close to the asking price of the villa. Despite the extensive work, it is rumored that Lagerfeld only spent one night there, using the mansion primarily for "peace, rest and study" and for entertaining guests.
This sale follows another recent property sale of Lagerfeld's; in March 2024, his futuristic three-room Paris apartment sold for EUR 10 million, double its asking price. These properties formerly owned by iconic figures often attract interest at auctions, due to their historical association.
