The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) has released its first eligibility list, identifying over 75% of tenement holders as eligible for new homes under the ambitious slum redevelopment initiative. The list covers 505 households in Mahim's Meghwadi and Ganesh Nagar, with 229 already cleared for resettlement and many others pending documentation or verification. Notably, the project offers inclusive rehabilitation to both residential and commercial units regardless of eligibility status and includes upper-floor residents, a first in Mumbai's redevelopment history. Residents have been invited to file objections or suggestions before the eligibility list is finalised.
The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) has released its first eligibility list, showing that more than 75% of the tenement holders have been approved for resettlement. The list covers 505 tenements located in Sector 6, specifically Meghwadi and Ganesh Nagar in Mahim.
Under the eligibility criteria, bona fide residents who settled in Dharavi before January 1, 2000, qualify for a 350 sq ft flat within Dharavi itself. Those who moved in between January 1, 2000, and January 1, 2011, may receive 300 sq ft units, but these would be located outside Dharavi in alternative housing sites.
Out of the 505 tenements, 229 have already been deemed eligible. Meanwhile, 31 households have not submitted any documents, 137 are pending verification by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), and 38 structures are classified as amenity units. The remaining 70 are still submitting supporting documents to validate their claims.
The DRP's CEO, SVR Srinivas, stated that each resident based on their eligibility will receive a home either within or outside Dharavi. He also emphasized that this redevelopment is the most inclusive project ever undertaken under the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), reiterating that even commercial units, regardless of eligibility, will be accommodated.
Srinivas explained that eligible commercial units will be given free in-situ spaces within Dharavi. Additionally, a proposal has been submitted to the government to allow ineligible commercial establishments to continue operations on a rental basis within the area. A 10% commercial space quota in each society has been earmarked specifically for such units to maintain business continuity and livelihoods.
As per the DRP's Annexure-II, 170 ground-floor tenements residential, commercial, and mixed-use have fulfilled the eligibility norms. Of these, 157 were established prior to 2000 and are entitled to 350 sq ft flats within Dharavi, while the remaining 13, labeled ?Shashulk Eligible, will get 300 sq ft homes at subsidised rates of INR 2.5 lakh, having settled before 2011.
The DRP has also approved 59 upper-floor tenement holders under a unique 'hire-purchase' scheme. These residents, who would typically be disqualified under other SRA schemes, will now receive 300 sq ft homes on rent for 12 years. At the end of this period or earlier if they choose they can legally own the property at a rate set by the government.
Moreover, those residing in upper floors or who moved in post-2011 usually excluded under regular SRA norms are not being left behind. They will be allotted new, well-maintained homes outside Dharavi but within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), with maintenance costs covered for the first 10 years.
The DRP has invited all tenement holders to submit objections or suggestions regarding the Draft Annexure-II list. These inputs will be accepted at the DRP office until the end of this week.
