Municipal corporations in various Indian cities have recently released their property tax collection figures for the first quarter of the current fiscal year. These reports, from cities like Nagpur, Ranchi, and Pimpri Chinchwad, reflect differing levels of success in revenue generation, showcasing varied collection strategies and citizen engagement efforts. While all three cities demonstrate a commitment to revenue generation, their Q1 FY26 property tax collection figures reveal distinct performances and strategic approaches.
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) collected INR 88.85 crore in property tax from April 1 to June 30. This collection came from 1,92,324 taxpayers, representing approximately 22.98% of Nagpur's 8.36 lakh property owners. The NMC offered a 15% rebate for online payments and 10% for offline payments during this period. Following this quarter, Commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari revised the annual revenue target from INR 350 crore to INR 400 crore. Along with this Future rebates of 10% for online and 5% for offline payments are offered until December 31.
In Ranchi, the Municipal Corporation (RMC) collected INR 39.33 crore in property tax during Q1 FY26. This marks their highest-ever first-quarter collection, received from 81,320 taxpayers, and surpassed its Q1 target of INR 35 crore. This collection represents an increase from INR 32.93 crore in Q1 FY25, INR 27.04 crore in Q1 FY24, and INR 21.90 crore in Q1 FY23.
Success is attributed to a tiered rebate system, which included a 10% rebate for lump-sum payments by June 30, with earlier rebates of 3%, 5%, and 7% in April and May. INR 12.52 crore was collected digitally from nearly 23,000 payers. An expanded door-to-door collection method accounted for INR 20.27 crore from over 53,500 taxpayers, while payment facilitation centers collected INR 1.94 crore. Deputy municipal commissioner Gautam Prasad noted these figures indicate improved participation.
In Pimpri Chinchwad, its Municipal Corporation (PCMC) also reported a substantial property tax collection for the first quarter of the current fiscal year. The city's civic body gathered INR 522 crore in property tax in Q1 FY26. This amount represents a 13.5% increase over the INR 460 crore collected in the same period of the previous fiscal year. This collection is notably over 50% of the total tax revenue earned in the previous fiscal year, where the INR 500 crore mark was reached only by October.
The record collection is linked to the "City Hub for Data Communication" (CHDC) project, launched in February, which enables data-driven planning and real-time analysis of defaulters. Reminder messages for historical payers were increased from April, including information about additional discounts such as a 10% concession for online payments and an extra 2% for timely payments for three consecutive years.
Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh highlighted that the tax department has done strategic planning by collaborative use of CHDC data, door-to-door bill delivery via self-help groups, and effective public communication. The PCMC aims for an unprecedented annual collection, having collected INR 965.71 crore in FY 2024-25 and INR 977 crore in 2023-24.
These Q1 FY26 property tax results from Nagpur, Ranchi, and Pimpri Chinchwad illustrate the diverse fiscal health and collection strategies of Indian municipalities. While figures vary, the consistent focus on tax mobilization through incentives and digital adoption is a shared commitment. Such efforts are crucial for sustaining urban development and enhancing civic services across the nation.
