Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has reported a record property tax collection of INR 366.80 crore in Q1 FY26, driven by citizen-focused initiatives and smart planning. Over 1 lakh taxpayers contributed, with 66% of the total collected online. The highest single-day intake, INR 90.84 crore, came on the quarter's last day. Nerul ward led contributions with INR 74.13 crore. Residential and industrial properties each made up 33% of collections. Incentives like a 10% rebate and tech tools such as a WhatsApp chatbot and mobile apps helped boost compliance. A 2% monthly penalty on late payments starts July. Commissioner Dr. Kailash Shinde praised public cooperation in achieving the milestone.
Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) recorded its highest-ever property tax collection of INR 366.80 crore during the first quarter of FY 2025-26. This accomplishment was credited to a combination of citizen-centric initiatives and systematic planning by the Property Tax Department. A total of 1,00,587 out of 3,47,788 registered taxpayers contributed during this period, with 63,488 individuals opting for the digital route, paying INR 220 crore online-accounting for 66% of the total tax collected.
The highest single-day collection of INR 90.84 crore was reported on the last day of the quarter. According to NMMC officials, the Nerul ward emerged as the highest contributor, bringing in INR 74.13 crore. Additionally, 99,703 taxpayers benefitted from a 10% rebate on general tax payments.
Tax data revealed that residential and industrial properties each contributed 33% of the total collections, while commercial properties accounted for 23%, and mixed/other assets made up 11%.
NMMC, which has set an annual target of INR 1,200 crore for property tax revenue in the ongoing fiscal, rolled out multiple innovative initiatives to enhance compliance. These included bill home delivery managed by women's self-help groups, mobile-app based KYC collection, digital payment platforms, and a WhatsApp chatbot for accessing tax bills. A 10% discount on the general tax component was also introduced to incentivise timely payments.
Further technological support came through the appointment of Foxberry Technology Pvt. Ltd., which was responsible for data analysis, property ownership verification, and facilitating a mobile app for efficient property data collection and campaign planning.
To deter defaulting taxpayers, NMMC commenced the imposition of a monthly penalty of 2% on unpaid tax amounts from July onwards. This step is aimed at encouraging timely tax remittances as the financial year progresses.
Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Dr. Kailash Shinde expressed appreciation for the collective efforts that led to the landmark achievement. He stated that every taxpayer plays a vital role in the city's development and described their participation in this record-setting quarter as a reflection of civic responsibility. He urged citizens to continue supporting NMMC's developmental goals by avoiding late payments and becoming active partners in the city's growth.
