This milestone underscores both past success and future ambition in addressing urban housing needs.

Ranchi Municipal Corporation recently celebrated a major milestone completing a decade under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U). Over the past ten years, the civic body has delivered 11,052 homes out of the total 12,587 units sanctioned, marking an 88% completion rate and showcasing its strong performance in addressing urban housing needs.

To commemorate the occasion, officials handed over house keys and small saplings to beneficiaries in five municipal wards, including Burdman Compound. The distribution aimed to symbolise not only a new beginning for the homeowners but also a step towards sustainable living through the promotion of green practices.

In the past few months, RMC has delivered 183 additional houses as part of the scheme, indicating its ongoing efforts to push forward the housing initiative. The support has come under the Beneficiary-Led Construction (BLC) vertical of PMAY-Urban, which helps eligible families build homes on their own plots. Under the scheme, the central government provides financial assistance of up to INR 2.5 lakh per family.

The scheme, now extended under PMAY-Urban 2.0 until 2029, continues to invite applications from urban families in need. Applicants must furnish proof of land ownership, Aadhaar card, and income certificate. Applications are accepted both online and offline, helping make the process accessible to a wider group of citizens.

Officials from RMC have highlighted that the housing initiative is not just about building homes but about improving quality of life for low-income urban families. As Ranchi continues to expand?especially under the Smart Cities Mission the success of schemes like PMAY-Urban becomes even more crucial in managing inclusive urban development.

On a broader level, the PMAY-Urban mission has already contributed to over one crore homes across India since its launch in 2015. The inclusion of Ranchi as a Lighthouse City in the earlier phase had allowed it to adopt innovative construction technologies, further improving delivery speed and efficiency.

The civic body's commitment over the last decade reflects both operational discipline and a community-first approach. Through targeted outreach, timely delivery, and sustainable messaging, RMC has set a solid foundation for expanding urban housing access in the years to come.
