A large-scale cleanliness campaign was undertaken in Navi Mumbai, spearheaded by Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) in collaboration with the Dr Nanasaheb Dharmadhikari Foundation, involving over 3,500 citizens and volunteers. The initiative targeted the Sion-Panvel highway and five major railway stations-Belapur, Nerul, Juinagar, Sanpada, and Vashi. Supervised by NMMC Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde and senior civic officials, the operation yielded 22 tonnes of waste, including plastic, paper, fabric, and overgrown vegetation. The campaign aligns with the national 'Swachh Bharat Mission' and was part of an early rollout under the upcoming 'Safai Apnao, Bimari Bhagao' drive.
Navi Mumbai witnessed a robust civic mobilisation as over 3,500 volunteers from the Dr Nanasaheb Dharmadhikari Foundation, along with local citizens, participated in an extensive cleanliness drive covering the Sion-Panvel highway and surrounding railway stations. This initiative was organised jointly by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and the Foundation, reflecting the city's longstanding reputation for maintaining high cleanliness standards and national rankings.
The campaign was flagged off at Uran Phata in the presence of NMMC Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde. He was joined by Additional Commissioner Dr Rahul Gethe, Deputy Commissioners Dr Ajay Gadade and Mrs Smita Kale, Assistant Commissioners Dr Amol Palve and Somanath Potre, and other senior civic officials. Dr Shinde expressed satisfaction over the enthusiastic turnout, noting that such collective efforts bolster the city's hygiene, especially during the monsoon season.
Five key railway stations-Belapur, Nerul, Juinagar, Sanpada, and Vashi-were included in the campaign, alongside multiple stretches of the Sion-Panvel highway. These locations, though not entirely under NMMC jurisdiction, were prioritised for cleaning due to their public significance and high footfall. Dr Shinde stated that the civic body had voluntarily taken responsibility for regular cleaning of this vital route.
The campaign removed approximately 22 tonnes of waste, which included single-use plastics, wrappers, bottles, paper, discarded fabric, and green waste such as overgrown weeds and vines. Volunteers were grouped and deployed across several checkpoints along the highway, including Belapur NMMC limits, Konkan Bhavan Circle, Uran Phata Bridge Circle, D.Y. Patil College Circle, Shiravane Underpass Bridge, Juinagar Flyover, and further up to the Vashi toll gate.
Planning was conducted in a decentralised manner with regional groups supervised by senior NMMC officers. Coordination officers were designated for each cluster, supported by sanitation workers, Swachhata Mitras, and Swachhata Sakhis. Assistant Commissioners Dr Amol Palve (Belapur), Mr Prakash Javadekar (Nerul), Mr Sagar More (Turbhe), and Mr Sukhdev Yedve (Vashi) were responsible for specific station areas, overseen by Chief Sanitation Officer Mr Rajendra Ingle.
Dr Shinde mentioned that the drive was part of the broader national 'Swachh Bharat Mission' and tied into the Union Government's 'Safai Apnao, Bimari Bhagao' campaign scheduled for rollout. He added that the NMMC had already integrated this mission into its prior events, including the International Yoga Day observance.
The event took place on a Sunday to ensure maximum public participation. Under the guidance of Padma Shri and Maharashtra Bhushan awardee Dr Appasaheb Dharmadhikari and Dr Sachindada Dharmadhikari, citizens demonstrated a strong sense of responsibility and environmental awareness. The effort exemplified the synergy between civic authorities and the community in addressing public health and sanitation.
