Delhi power minister directs discoms to upgrade infra amid record heat and demand

In light of Delhi's soaring temperatures and record-breaking power demand, Power Minister Ashish Sood has instructed the city's electricity distribution companies to enhance their infrastructure and improve emergency response mechanisms. During a recent review meeting, Sood urged the replacement of ageing grids, adoption of new technology, and immediate fault-detection systems. He also emphasised the importance of data analytics for operational efficiency. Stressing on sustainable alternatives, he encouraged aggressive promotion of solar power, particularly in areas where conventional meters are impractical, highlighting the urgency due to the city's escalating heatwave and energy consumption.

In response to the capital's severe heatwave and surging electricity demand, Delhi's Power Minister Ashish Sood directed all electricity distribution companies to fortify their infrastructure. The directive came during a review meeting held with senior officials from the Power Department and representatives of all three discoms. Delhi witnessed its highest peak power demand of the summer, with real-time data from the State Load Dispatch Centre showing consumption reaching 8,423 MW during the afternoon hours.


Temperatures in the capital soared as high as 45.2 degrees Celsius, as reported by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD issued a red alert, advising residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct exposure to sunlight, and limit outdoor activity.

Following the meeting, Sood stated that all power companies in Delhi had been instructed to enhance their systems to cope with the rising load. He stressed the importance of preparedness in light of ongoing weather forecasts. Among the measures outlined were replacing outdated power grids, laying new power cables, and adopting modern technologies for electricity generation and distribution.

He also instructed that outages resulting from natural events such as strong winds, heavy rain, or falling trees must be addressed swiftly to ensure minimal disruption to the public. The focus, he added, should be on building systems that can immediately detect faults and enable rapid deployment of response teams. Furthermore, discoms were asked to utilise data analytics to improve operational efficiency and reduce downtime.

Sood additionally called on power companies to intensify efforts in solar energy adoption. He stressed that with the city's rising demand, solar power integration had become vital. He encouraged the Power Department and discoms to motivate every electricity user in Delhi to consider installing rooftop solar panels. Moreover, he underlined the necessity of prioritising solar-based supply in areas where traditional meters are not feasible.

By reinforcing infrastructure and championing solar energy, the administration is seeking not only to meet immediate electricity demands but also to future-proof the system against climatic and consumption-related stress. The emphasis on real-time monitoring, rapid fault resolution, and strategic use of data underscores a more responsive and resilient energy network. As temperatures continue to rise and energy use climbs, these interventions may set a precedent for urban power management across other major Indian cities.
