In a stringent move to uphold construction standards, the Haryana Irrigation Department has charge-sheeted 80 officials following the failure of 18 out of 48 tested material samples in various ongoing projects. The state's Water Resources Minister, Shruti Choudhry, underscored a zero-tolerance stance towards corruption and substandard materials, stating that officials will be held accountable, especially in projects nearing completion. The vigilance wing carried out surprise inspections after persistent complaints, signalling tighter oversight. The minister also highlighted the significance of the Kishau Dam, which is set to bolster Haryana's water supply for both drinking and irrigation purposes.
A total of 18 out of 48 construction material samples collected from various ongoing projects under Haryana's Irrigation Department failed quality inspections, prompting the state to initiate disciplinary action against 80 officials. The action, which includes charges under Sections 7 and 8 of the Haryana Civil Services Rules, spans officials from Junior Engineers to Chief Engineers.
Haryana's Irrigation and Water Resources Minister, Shruti Choudhry, stated during the past week that the government would not make any compromises on construction quality and declared that corruption would not be tolerated under any circumstances. She noted that many of the current projects are in their final stages, which heightens the level of responsibility on the officials involved.
She revealed that following several persistent complaints, the vigilance wing conducted raids at multiple sites and gathered material samples for examination. The inspection results confirmed quality lapses in a substantial number of cases, leading to immediate administrative action.
The minister also pointed out that contractors had already received significant payments for these projects, and authorities would now explore possibilities of recovering funds in cases where substandard materials had been used.
Referring to the Kishau Dam project, she remarked that it holds national significance for Haryana, serving both irrigation and drinking water needs. The dam is expected to channel 709 cusecs of water from the Yamuna river to the state, improving water availability across regions.
With top-level intervention and vigilance, the administration is signalling a shift toward stricter compliance, even if it means cracking down on its own ranks. The spotlight on the Kishau Dam also underlines Haryana's broader strategy to secure long-term water sustainability.
