Coal India Ltd has partnered with Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata, to transform the iconic Howrah Bridge through a solar-powered dynamic illumination initiative. The project, aimed at showcasing the structural grandeur of the 80-year-old bridge, will feature volumetric and skeleton lighting synchronised with music. Officials confirmed that the upgraded lighting would vastly improve the existing setup and enrich the nightly experience for lakhs of commuters and visitors. The tendering process is currently underway, with the project expected to be completed within a year.

The agreement was formalised earlier this week at Coal Bhawan, the headquarters of CIL, in the presence of CIL Chairman P M Prasad and SMPK Chairman Rathendra Raman. Also in attendance were Deputy Chairman Samrat Rahi and senior officials from both organisations.
Officials stated that the initiative aims to turn the more-than-eight-decade-old Howrah Bridge-also known as Rabindra Setu-into a breathtaking visual display, enhancing its architectural prominence. The lighting will be powered by solar energy, reflecting Kolkata's commitment to sustainable urban development.
They further elaborated that the dynamic lighting will accentuate the bridge's structural design, offering a spectacular night-time experience to over one lakh vehicles and 1.5 lakh pedestrians who use the bridge daily. The lighting scheme will include both volumetric and skeleton elements, complemented by synchronised musical performances, elevating the city's heritage representation.
According to Deputy Chairman Rahi, the project is a significant enhancement over the current illumination, which has remained unchanged for years. He added that the tendering process was already in motion, and the entire project is expected to reach completion within a year.
Constructed in 1943, the Howrah Bridge stands as a symbol of Kolkata's engineering prowess and cultural identity, and this lighting initiative is poised to further reinforce its iconic status.
By integrating renewable energy with innovative lighting design, the project bridges tradition with modernity. Once completed, the dynamic illumination is likely to become not only a visual marvel but also a cultural beacon, drawing attention to the city's sustainable and aesthetic aspirations.
