In a firm step toward enforcing urban development regulations, the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) launched a demolition drive earlier this week in Titwala, targeting illegal plinths and unauthorised structures. Acting under directives from senior civic officials, the operation was carried out despite local resistance. This move follows a wider pattern of strict administrative action by KDMC, which had previously suspended municipal staff over delayed responses to illegal developments. With parallel efforts like green initiatives and sanitation reforms, KDMC aims to realign growth with compliance in fast-expanding suburban pockets.
The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) carried out a decisive demolition operation earlier this week in the Titwala area, targeting unauthorised plinths and illegal constructions. Civic teams dismantled structures that had been erected without any formal approval, despite warnings issued to the violators. This is part of a larger, ongoing crackdown to curb irregular developments across KDMC's jurisdiction.
According to officials, the demolished structures included plinths and rooms that were being developed without sanctioned plans. Builders had reportedly started erecting full-fledged chawls without permissions, prompting the civic body to initiate action. The operation was spearheaded under the direction of KDMC Commissioner Abhinav Goel and Assistant Municipal Commissioner Atul Patil, who affirmed that such illegal activities would not be tolerated. Despite opposition from local residents during the demolition, the civic team remained steadfast in executing the order.
This is not the first time Titwala has come under scrutiny for unauthorised developments. In an earlier instance, KDMC had razed 167 illegal plinths and structures in the Baneli and Titwala regions. Following that, the municipal commissioner had even suspended an assistant commissioner for neglecting to act against the increasing volume of unauthorised constructions in the area. The decision was taken after reports emerged indicating unchecked development between 2019 and 2022. The civic body had also received directions from the High Court to act against such encroachments.
Alongside enforcement, KDMC is also actively working on several developmental and environmental initiatives. Recently, the corporation launched an ambitious tree-planting campaign on the occasion of Environment Day, aiming to plant 100,000 saplings. The civic body has also implemented Maharashtra's first 'Chennai Pattern' waste-management model, reflecting its commitment to improving urban living standards.
KDMC is currently overseeing large-scale infrastructure projects, including the ongoing work on the Kalyan-Shilphata road expansion. These infrastructure upgrades, coupled with cleanliness drives and policy enforcement, indicate a comprehensive approach to managing the city's urban sprawl.
When paired with long-term environmental and infrastructural initiatives, such steps serve as a blueprint for planned urban development. The challenge now lies in sustaining this momentum, reinforcing transparency, and ensuring that rapid urbanisation aligns with legal and environmental frameworks.
