The Patna Metro Rail Project is progressing well, with the priority corridor between Patna Junction and ISBT nearing completion. Bihar Urban Development Minister Jibesh Kumar recently inspected key sites, including the ISBT metro station and depot, and expressed satisfaction with the project's pace and quality. The 6.6-km priority corridor features five elevated stations: Malahi Pakri, Khemnichak (interchange), Bhoothnath, Zero Mile, and Patliputra ISBT. Inauguration is slated for August 15 this year. The ISBT depot, spanning 30.5 hectares, is being built at a cost of INR 142 crore and will support operations with maintenance facilities, a stabling yard, control centre, and sub-station. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is providing technical support. Once operational, the metro promises to improve urban mobility, offering Patna residents faster, safer, and eco-friendly transport options, marking a major step in Bihar's urban modernisation.
The Patna Metro Rail Project is progressing steadily, with Bihar?s Urban Development and Housing Minister Jibesh Kumar recently inspecting the construction sites at the ISBT metro station in Bairiya and the adjoining depot. His visit focused on the priority corridor of the initiative, a vital segment of Corridor II that stretches from Patna Junction to ISBT. Minister Kumar expressed satisfaction with both the speed and quality of work being carried out. He applauded the combined efforts of engineers, workers, and officials involved in the project, acknowledging their commitment to transforming urban transportation in the state capital.
During the inspection, Minister Kumar reiterated the government's dedication to delivering a modern, efficient, and eco-friendly public transit system. He assured citizens that the metro service, once operational, would significantly enhance daily commutes by making travel faster, safer, and more accessible.
Accompanying the minister on the site visit were Varsha Singh, Additional Secretary of the Urban Development Department and Additional Managing Director of Patna Metro Rail Corporation Limited (PMRCL), along with senior representatives from both PMRCL and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), which is lending its expertise to the project.
The priority corridor, extending over 6.6 kilometres, is nearing completion. Its inauguration is scheduled for August 15 this year, marking a significant milestone in Bihar?s journey toward urban modernization. This corridor will feature five elevated stations: Malahi Pakri, Khemnichak, Bhoothnath, Zero Mile, and Patliputra ISBT. Among these, Khemnichak station holds strategic importance, functioning as an interchange between Corridor I (Danapur to Khemnichak) and Corridor II. It will accommodate two platforms on a single level to facilitate seamless passenger transfers between lines.
A cornerstone of the corridor?s infrastructure is the ISBT metro depot, currently under development on a 30.5-hectare site. Of this, 19.2 hectares are designated exclusively for depot operations. Constructed at an estimated cost of INR 142 crore, the facility will house essential support infrastructure. This includes dedicated zones for parking, train maintenance and repairs, a testing track, stabling yard, and a depot workshop. Additional facilities include an operational control centre and a sub-station to ensure reliable energy supply for metro functions.
This project not only represents a technological leap in urban mobility for Patna but also reflects the administration?s resolve to deliver public infrastructure that aligns with contemporary needs. With major construction nearing completion, the city is on the brink of welcoming its first metro system?a step toward a smarter, more connected Bihar.
