The reconstruction of Mumbai's iconic Byculla bridge, officially the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Railway Bridge, has reached the halfway point, with completion targeted by late 2025. The bridge connects NM Joshi Marg to Rani Baug and Clare Road, serving as a vital east-west link over Central Railway tracks. The revamped structure will enhance connectivity to key routes like the Eastern Express Highway, P D'Mello Road, and Mohammed Ali Road. MMRDA officials reported near-completion of substructure work on the eastern side, with western-side construction underway. Steel girder installation will begin shortly. The old bridge was dismantled following safety concerns flagged by IIT Bombay and Central Railway. Phased construction, night work, and coordination with rail authorities have helped the project regain momentum after earlier delays. Once completed, the bridge will significantly ease traffic flow and improve transport connectivity in South Mumbai.
The ongoing reconstruction of the iconic Byculla bridge has reached the halfway mark, with MMRDA aiming for completion by late 2025. The bridge, which spans Central Railway tracks and connects NM Joshi Marg in the west to Rani Baug and Clare Road in the east, serves as a vital conduit between South Mumbai's key roads.
Formally known as the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Railway Bridge, the revamped structure will improve connectivity across the Eastern Express Highway, P D'Mello Road, and Mohammed Ali Road. MMRDA officials confirmed that the substructure and piling works on the eastern side are nearly done, while construction on the western side is underway.
Authorities stated that steel girder installation will commence shortly. The old bridge was dismantled following structural safety concerns raised by IIT Bombay and the Central Railway.
To ensure timely delivery, MMRDA has adopted a phased construction schedule, coordinating night work and rail block arrangements with railway authorities. While the project initially experienced delays due to design revisions and logistical complexities, it has picked up pace in recent months.
The full reopening of the Byculla bridge is expected to alleviate traffic pressure and provide seamless connectivity between east and west corridors in South Mumbai. With a revised timeline in place and improved inter-agency coordination, MMRDA appears confident in completing the work before the end of the year. Once functional, the bridge is likely to become a key element of Mumbai's urban transport grid, contributing to smoother commuting experiences and better infrastructure resilience in the city's southern zone.
