Synopsis

The Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC) formalised a partnership with the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), Delhi, aimed at accelerating the city's urban development initiatives. The Memorandum of Understanding, endorsed under the supervision of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, will enable SPA Delhi to provide technical and academic expertise to help Sambalpur evolve into a model planned city. The collaboration includes comprehensive support in spatial planning, infrastructure design, heritage conservation, and sustainable urban development, alongside capacity-building programmes and field studies tailored to the city's unique cultural and geographical context.

Earlier this week, the Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC) entered into a strategic collaboration with the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), Delhi, to spearhead a wide-ranging urban development initiative for the city. The agreement was signed in the presence of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, underscoring the government's commitment to developing Sambalpur as a model urban centre.

Collector S B Bondar remarked that this partnership with one of India's premier architectural institutions would provide critical support in designing the city's master plan and implementing various infrastructure projects. He noted that the collaboration aligns closely with the Union Minister's directive to transform Sambalpur into a well-planned and sustainable city.

SMC Commissioner Vedbhusan described the partnership as a new chapter for Sambalpur's growth. With SPA Delhi's involvement, the municipality aims to build a resilient and inclusive urban environment that addresses both present and future challenges.

The MoU outlines a broad spectrum of cooperation, including technical and academic assistance in spatial planning, infrastructure design, heritage conservation, and sustainable urban practices. Additionally, the partnership will facilitate capacity-building initiatives, workshops, and field studies specifically designed to address the city's geographical uniqueness and cultural heritage.

This initiative follows earlier urban development efforts in India where collaborations between local governments and academic institutions have played a pivotal role in shaping sustainable urban landscapes. SPA Delhi's involvement promises to bring global best practices and innovative design thinking to Sambalpur, contributing to its emergence as a model for urban development.

This approach not only addresses the immediate developmental demands but also sets a precedent for inclusive growth that can be replicated across India's emerging cities. Ultimately, the collaboration signals a progressive vision where planned urbanisation fosters economic vitality, cultural preservation, and enhanced quality of life for residents.
