Schaeffler India has inaugurated its fifth manufacturing facility in Shoolagiri, Tamil Nadu, marking a significant expansion in the company's operations. The 16,500 square meter plant focuses on producing powertrain and chassis components, including technologies for both conventional and hybrid vehicles. This move aligns with Schaeffler's strategy to enhance its local capabilities and cater to the growing automotive demands in India. The facility is part of a broader 108,000 square meter development, with full-scale production expected by the fourth quarter of 2025. The company has invested INR 1,700 crore between 2022 and 2024, surpassing its initial commitment of INR 1,500 crore. This investment underscores Schaeffler's commitment to India's 'Make in India' initiative and its focus on sustainable manufacturing practices.
As part of its plan to improve local production capabilities and meet India's rising automotive demands, Schaeffler India opened its fifth manufacturing facility in Shoolagiri, Tamil Nadu. The new 16,500 square meter plant focuses on producing powertrain and chassis components, including technologies for both conventional and hybrid vehicles. This facility is part of a broader 108,000 square meter development, with full-scale production expected by the fourth quarter of 2025.
Matthias Zink, CEO of Powertrain & Chassis at Schaeffler AG, emphasized the importance of India as a key market for Schaeffler. He stated that the new facility is a significant step in the company's efforts to expand its global manufacturing footprint and further localization in the region. Harsha Kadam, Managing Director and CEO of Schaeffler India Limited, highlighted the company's commitment to expanding its capacities and competencies in India, enabling it to better meet the evolving needs of customers. He also underscored Schaeffler's focus on India's 'Make in India' initiative and sustainable practices.
Between 2022 and 2024, Schaeffler India invested INR 1,700 crore to expand its local capabilities, exceeding the original commitment of INR 1,500 crore. This investment includes the development of powertrain and e-mobility solutions, as well as bearings for industrial use. In 2023, Schaeffler India also acquired Koovers, a B2B e-commerce platform, to enhance its presence in the digital automotive aftermarket.
The Shoolagiri facility incorporates several green features, such as natural daylight utilization, battery-operated material handling equipment, rainwater harvesting, zero liquid discharge systems, energy-efficient equipment with eco-mode functionality, waste heat recovery, 100% LED lighting, digitalized operations, ergonomic workstations, and a work environment aimed at being diverse and inclusive. These initiatives align with Schaeffler's global sustainability strategy and support India's manufacturing initiatives.
By investing in advanced technologies and sustainable practices, Schaeffler is poised to contribute significantly to India's automotive industry and its transition towards electrification and hybrid technologies.
