Synopsis

The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) has launched a major demolition drive targeting illegal constructions in Jhampur village and Sector 39 (West), led by officer Arvind Pannu. A total of 30 unauthorised structures were razed-25 in Jhampur and 7 in Sector 39 (West). In Phase 3 of the 39 West Society, developers were found illegally expanding the colony and connecting unsanctioned plots to public utilities despite their licence being cancelled. GMADA's action follows repeated complaints from residents and signals a tougher stance on illegal development. The drive highlights the need for stricter urban planning enforcement to protect infrastructure and public interest.

In a significant move against illegal construction, the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) launched a demolition drive targeting unauthorised structures in Jhampur village and Sector 39 (West). The operation was spearheaded by GMADA officer Arvind Pannu.

A total of 30 illegal constructions were brought down during the drive. The bulk of these-approximately 25-were located in Jhampur village, where houses under construction and other unapproved structures were razed. The demolition was part of a broader effort to curb unregulated development and enforce zoning and planning regulations more strictly in the area.

Simultaneously, enforcement teams undertook action in Phase 3 of the 39 West Society, situated in Sector 122. In this area, colonisers were discovered to be illegally expanding the housing colony by carving out new plots beyond the officially sanctioned layout. This was done despite the cancellation of their development licence. These unauthorised plots had been illicitly linked to the existing civic infrastructure, including essential services such as water supply, sewerage lines, and electricity connections.

GMADA authorities dismantled at least seven such illegal constructions in Sector 39 (West) as part of this coordinated action. The connecting of these unsanctioned plots to public utilities was seen as a serious violation, prompting immediate removal.

Residents of the area had been raising alarms about these unauthorised developments for some time.

The demolition drive marks one of the more assertive actions taken by GMADA in recent times and reflects a growing intolerance towards illegal construction in Mohali. It also underscores the pressing need for stricter monitoring of colonisation activities and adherence to urban development guidelines to prevent future violations and safeguard both infrastructure and citizens' investments.
