Civic officials instructed residents to remain cautious and to evacuate these high-risk slopes before the heavy rains set in. Authorities confirmed that evacuation notices had been served to residents of these vulnerable localities, advising them to migrate to safer sites before the situation worsens.
Over the years, incidents triggered by monsoon showers and intense winds have led to multiple landslides, house collapses, and loss of life in the city?s slum settlements, particularly those situated on steep terrains. While no catastrophic landslide has been reported in the current year so far, officials referenced that in 2021, 32 people lost their lives in such tragedies in Chembur and Vikhroli.
According to the Geological Survey of India, surveys identified numerous landslide-sensitive areas, particularly in the eastern suburbs. Among the most vulnerable zones are Vikhroli and Bhandup, with additional spots flagged across the city.
Civic authorities also confirmed that landslide-prone homes have been newly identified in the N ward during this year?s survey and assessment efforts.
By enforcing precautionary relocations, the civic body is not only acting on past experiences but also responding to expert surveys that spotlight vulnerable zones. The real test, however, lies in how effectively these advisories are implemented and whether residents comply with evacuation notices. As the rains approach, timely and coordinated action will be essential to avoid a repeat of past tragedies and to safeguard lives in Mumbai?s most at-risk localities.
