Synopsis

The Prayagraj district administration has initiated stringent recovery actions against more than 2,000 beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) who received financial assistance but failed to construct their homes. The defaulters include 1,507 rural beneficiaries under PMAY-Gramin and 504 urban beneficiaries under PMAY-Urban. Notably, nearly 470 urban beneficiaries received financial aid almost six years ago but have yet to commence construction. The administration is preparing to issue Recovery Certificates (RCs) from the respective tehsils to reclaim the misused public funds.

More than 2,000 Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) recipients who were given financial aid but were unable to build their homes have been the target of firm action from the Prayagraj district administration. This includes 1,507 rural beneficiaries under PMAY-Gramin and 504 urban beneficiaries under PMAY-Urban. Among the urban defaulters, nearly 470 individuals received financial aid nearly six years ago but have yet to commence construction. In some cases, more than 400 beneficiaries have not even laid the foundation for their houses, and approximately 100 have constructed only partial structures.

The highest concentration of defaulters is found in urban areas such as Jhalwa, Dhoomanganj, Salori, Baghara, Rajapur, Kareli, and Rajrooppur. Similarly, towns like Sirsa, Bharatganj, Koraon, Shankargarh, Handia, Phulpur, Mauaima, and Lal Gopalganj have also reported significant instances of non-compliance.

In rural areas, approximately 1,450 beneficiaries across tehsils like Koraon, Meja, Karchhana, Bara, Phulpur, and Handia have failed to initiate construction despite receiving all installments of government aid. In many cases, the homes have not progressed beyond the foundation stage, with some plots not even undergoing excavation.

To address this issue, the District Urban Development Agency (DUDA) is preparing to send formal reports to the concerned tehsils for the issuance of Recovery Certificates (RCs) against urban defaulters. DUDA is also working on similar documentation for rural areas to take further action.

Chief Development Officer Harshika Singh emphasized that beneficiaries who receive financial aid under PMAY must ensure the funds are used strictly for home construction. Those who ignored three notices and failed to show progress in construction will now face strict recovery action. This crackdown is part of a broader move to enforce accountability and ensure that government schemes reach genuine beneficiaries who intend to utilize the support for its intended purpose.

By holding beneficiaries accountable, the administration aims to uphold the integrity of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and ensure that the dream of homeownership becomes a reality for deserving individuals.
