Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Yellow Line of Bengaluru's Namma Metro on August 10. The 19.15-kilometer corridor, connecting R.V. Road to Bommasandra is expected to ease traffic on a busy stretch of the city and provide a major transport link to the Electronic City IT hub. On the same day, the Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for the new 44.65-kilometer Phase-3 expansion. This dual launch, which will expand Bengaluru's metro network to over 90 kilometers, is part of a larger push to address the city's traffic challenges and strengthen its public transport system.
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Yellow Line of Bengaluru's Namma Metro on August 10. This 19.15-kilometer corridor, connecting R.V. road in the southern part of the city to Bommasandra, is expected to provide relief from traffic congestion. The Yellow Line has 16 stations and was built at a cost of approximately INR 5,057 crore.
Officials from the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) stated that the line is expected to ease traffic, especially at the busy Silk Board junction and on Hosur Road. The line is strategically designed to serve Bengaluru's technology corridor, with stations providing access to Electronic City, a major IT hub that is home to more than 300 companies. The line also includes stations funded by private companies, with Infosys funding the Konappana Agrahara station and Biocon funding the Hebbagodi station.
The Yellow Line will be the city's first fully driverless metro line. Commercial operations are likely to begin on August 11, a day after the inauguration. Initially, only three driverless trains will be in service, running at 25-minute intervals. However, BMRCL officials expect the frequency to improve as more trains are delivered and full-scale operations begin by early next year, at which point daily ridership is expected to grow to nearly 8 lakh commuters.
On the day of the Yellow Line inauguration, the Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for the 44.65-kilometer Phase-3 expansion of the Namma Metro project. This phase, approved by the Union Cabinet, is estimated to cost INR 15,611 crore. It will expand the city's metro network by adding 31 new stations, with an expected completion date by the end of 2029. The new line will primarily serve areas along Magadi Road and the western part of the Outer Ring Road (ORR), connecting parts of the city that were previously underserved.
With the launch of the Yellow Line and the start of Phase-3, Bengaluru Metro's total operational network will expand to over 90 kilometers, further strengthening the city's urban transport system and addressing long-term traffic woes.
