Synopsis

The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has obtained a INR 750 crore loan from the World Bank to strengthen the city's sewerage infrastructure. The project will involve laying over 200 km of new sewer lines and replacing old ones across six municipal divisions, including Pachavati, Cidco, Nashik Road, and Satpur. Currently, the city manages around 323.3 million litres of sewage per day through 1,600 km of existing networks. The initiative also aligns with the AMRUT scheme, under which the government contributes 50% of the funding, while the remaining comes from the civic body.

The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has successfully secured a INR 750 crore loan from the World Bank to fund a major sewerage network expansion project. This effort focuses on constructing over 200 km of new sewer lines and upgrading aging infrastructure across multiple areas of the city, including emerging localities such as Pachavati, Cidco, Nashik Road, and Satpur. The plan aims to enhance overall sanitation services and accommodate the city's growing urban population.

NMC officials recently met with World Bank representatives at Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan, the municipal headquarters, to discuss the loan and project details. A senior NMC official explained that the meeting covered the possibility of financing sewerage lines across six municipal divisions, emphasizing the need to modernize the existing network and expand services to newer areas.

Ravindra Dharanakar, NMC's superintending engineer for water and sewage management, said that while the exact length of sewer lines will be confirmed after a detailed project report, preliminary estimates indicate that over 200 km of lines will be needed, amounting to a cost of approximately INR 750 crore.

Currently, Nashik generates around 323.3 million litres of sewage per day, which is managed through an existing network of roughly 1,600 km. The NMC has also invited bids for laying about 90 km of additional sewer lines at an estimated cost of INR 190 crore. Under the central government's Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme, 50% of the funding will come from government sources, split equally between central and state governments, with the remaining 50% contributed by the civic body.

The World Bank's involvement provides not only financial support but also technical guidance, ensuring that the project meets modern standards for efficiency and sustainability. The initiative is a significant step in strengthening Nashik's urban infrastructure and sanitation management.
