Synopsis

Mahindra & Mahindra has expressed interest in acquiring a 350-acre land parcel in Igatpuri, Maharashtra, to support its manufacturing ecosystem. Company executives explained that the land could serve multiple purposes, including setting up a supplier park or developing feeder facilities for the existing Nashik and Igatpuri plants. Alongside this, the automaker is expanding capacity at its Chakan plant and has outlined investment plans exceeding INR 27,000 crore in its automotive business between FY25 and FY27.

Mahindra & Mahindra has formally submitted a letter of interest to the Maharashtra government to acquire 350 acres of land in Igatpuri. The Mumbai-headquartered automaker already operates key manufacturing plants in both Nashik and Igatpuri.

Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director and CEO of the company's auto and farm sectors, mentioned that the proposed land acquisition forms part of Mahindra's wider ecosystem. He explained that the Nashik and Igatpuri facilities could benefit from a feeder unit in close proximity.

He noted that the land could be used for multiple purposes, such as establishing a supplier park or creating additional support for operations at either of the two existing plants. At the same time, he clarified that the process remains at a preliminary stage, requiring due diligence and various levels of internal and regulatory approval before any final decision is taken.

He added that while the expression of interest was accurate, the company would still need to secure approvals before moving forward with the acquisition.

Separately, Mahindra & Mahindra CEO of the automotive division, Nalinikanth Gollagunta, indicated that the automaker is expanding production capacity at its Chakan facility. The expansion in the first phase would add around 2.4 lakh units annually, raising overall production capacity to nearly 7.5-7.6 lakh units per year.

Gollagunta also stated that the company is exploring the possibility of establishing greenfield manufacturing sites to increase capacity beyond 2027. In addition, Mahindra has announced an investment of over INR 27,000 crore in its automotive operations during the FY25-FY27 period.

With parallel expansion underway at its Chakan plant and significant capital earmarked for automotive operations, Mahindra appears committed to boosting capacity and preparing for long-term demand.
