Synopsis

A technical team from the Kerala Coastal Zone Management Authority (KCZMA) recently conducted a detailed inspection at the sites in Maradu, Kochi, where apartment complexes had been demolished following Supreme Court orders. The visit aimed to review compliance with Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms, assess post-demolition land restoration and evaluate the ecological health of the adjoining water bodies. A comprehensive report will soon be presented to the central and state governments.

A technical expert team from the Kerala Coastal Zone Management Authority (KCZMA) visited the Maradu municipality earlier this month to assess the condition of sites where several apartment complexes were demolished following the Supreme Court's directive. The team included KCZMA's technical officers, district town-planning representatives, and engineers from Maradu municipality. Their visit focused primarily on reviewing compliance with Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) regulations, analysing the environmental impact of the demolition, and verifying the progress of restoration measures undertaken in the affected areas.

Officials informed that the site inspection was part of the court-mandated follow-up process to ensure that the land restoration and environmental rehabilitation activities had been executed in accordance with national and state guidelines. The team examined the reclaimed areas, inspected water bodies nearby, and assessed whether construction debris had been properly cleared. The inspection also covered checks on the ecological balance of the surrounding environment and the potential long-term impact of the demolitions on local biodiversity.

According to municipal representatives, the inspection aimed to ensure transparency and accountability in post-demolition management. The chairperson of Maradu municipality reportedly expressed concern that the episode had severely tarnished the town's reputation and hampered its urban development. He pointed out that those responsible for the original regulatory failures, including the then panchayat president, had not faced consequences, and he urged the government to reconsider its position of shielding those individuals.

Officials from KCZMA confirmed that a detailed report based on the inspection would soon be submitted to both the state and central governments, summarising findings and recommendations for further corrective measures.
