Synopsis

The Uttar Pradesh government has successfully completed 29 significant irrigation projects over the past eight years, enhancing irrigation capacity by more than 19 lakh hectares and directly benefiting over 4.3 million farmers statewide. This large-scale initiative has not only bolstered agricultural productivity but also contributed substantially to flood control and water conservation efforts. Among the completed ventures are seven major projects, including the Bansagar Canal and Lahchura Dam, spanning multiple districts. Additionally, medium and small-scale projects have further expanded irrigation reach, positively impacting tens of thousands of farmers and strengthening the region's agrarian infrastructure.

The Uttar Pradesh government has completed 29 significant irrigation projects over the past eight years, substantially enhancing the state's irrigation capacity and directly benefiting more than 4.3 million farmers, according to an official statement. These initiatives have not only boosted agricultural productivity but have also played a vital role in flood control and water conservation efforts across the region.

Among the seven major irrigation projects finished during this period are the Bansagar Canal Project, Lahchura Dam Project, Pahari Dam Project, Saryu Canal National Project, Arjun Sahayak Canal Project, Phase II of the UP Water Restructuring Project, and Phase II of the Umarhat Pump Project. Collectively, these ventures have benefited over 4.2 million farmers residing in numerous districts, including Mirzapur, Prayagraj, Mahoba, Hamirpur, Bahraich, Gonda, Balrampur, Shravasti, Siddharthnagar, Sant Kabir Nagar, Basti, Gorakhpur, Maharajganj, Banda, Amethi, Raebareli, Etawah, Etah, Kannauj, Kanpur Dehat, Kasganj, Kaushambi, Fatehpur, Farrukhabad, Firozabad, Barabanki, Mainpuri, and Lalitpur.

These projects have collectively expanded the irrigation capacity by approximately 1.84 million hectares, enabling more efficient and sustainable water use for agriculture. This significant expansion has fortified the region's ability to cope with water shortages and irregular rainfall, thereby stabilising crop yields and improving livelihoods.

In addition to these large projects, 16 medium-scale irrigation schemes have also been completed in the past eight years. These medium projects have provided irrigation benefits to around 97,000 farmers in districts such as Lalitpur, Hamirpur, Jhansi, Chitrakoot (Karbi), Mirzapur, Rampur, Mahoba, and Maharajganj, further increasing the irrigated area by over 64,000 hectares.

Small-scale irrigation projects have also formed an important part of this comprehensive water infrastructure development. Six such projects have been successfully executed, expanding water availability to farming communities and supporting localized agricultural needs.

This extensive irrigation infrastructure development programme reflects the government's long-term commitment to enhancing agricultural productivity while simultaneously addressing water management challenges. By increasing the acreage under irrigation and strengthening flood control mechanisms, these projects have paved the way for more resilient agricultural practices in Uttar Pradesh.
