The municipal government has kicked off an ambitious urban renewal effort by relocating nine slum clusters from Bhopal's city centre to sites within a 3-5 km radius. Around 14,000 permanent homes will be built via a Public-Private Partnership on government land. This move part of the wider Jhuggi Mukt Bhopal Yojana aims to free up 125 acres in the heart of the city and revamp living standards across 388 slums impacting 150,000 households. It follows previous survey efforts and on-site redevelopment plans near high-security zones that were abandoned to avoid security issues.
Bhopal's city centre is undergoing a big change after authorities decided to relocate nine central slum areas, including Vallabh Nagar, Om Nagar, Bhim Nagar, Durga Nagar, Ashok Samrat Nagar, Kumharpura, and Jhada Colony. People living in these areas will soon move to new homes in Banganga, Jinsi, and nearby places up to 5 km away. Around 14,000 permanent houses are being built there through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), according to officials.
Initial efforts for redevelopment on the existing slum sites were scrapped because those areas fall within the security perimeter of Vallabh-Bhawan. With the target locations offering government land in Banganga, officials say construction will start once the urban administration department signs off on the detailed project reports. The shift is expected to unlock approximately 125 acres of valuable land in the city's centre.
These relocations form a pivotal phase of the wider Jhuggi Mukt Bhopal Yojana, a scheme extending across 388 slums and covering more than 150,000 households citywide. Socio-economic surveys, managed digitally, have been carried out since last year as part of planning efforts . Under the PPP model, private developers will erect new housing blocks for the displaced population and integrate commercial components to ensure long-term financial sustainability.
This initiative builds on earlier land identification exercises, including a proposed relocation that was halted at the end of last year. Those efforts had focused on redeveloping slums on alternate land before the decision turned to moving offsite.
Bhopal has tackled urban slums before. Last year, attempts to relocate Vallabh-Nagar to another site were rejected by the state's urban development department, pushing land searches toward areas like Banganga. Surveys covering around 10,000 slums in areas like Bhim, Om and Vallabh were underway for densification under the 'Slum-free Bhopal' plan where private developers would finance housing and commercial infrastructure in PPP mode.
