Synopsis

Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro) has started a feasibility study for the 11.5 km Sitabuldi-Koradi metro corridor in Nagpur, part of the city's Phase 3 metro expansion. The study will examine traffic density, commuter movement, corridor alignment, and integration with existing transport systems. The corridor is projected to handle a peak hour peak direction traffic (PHPDT) of 5,600 by 2031, rising to 11,800 by 2054, and daily ridership of 65,000 to 147,000. Financial models, last-mile connectivity, and seamless transfers will also be assessed.

MahaMetro has initiated a feasibility study for the proposed Sitabuldi-Koradi metro corridor in Nagpur, marking a significant step in expanding the city's metro network. The corridor, part of Nagpur Metro Phase 3, will stretch approximately 11.5 km and is planned to enhance connectivity between central Nagpur and the developing Koradi area.

The study will evaluate traffic density, commuter movement, and corridor alignment to determine ridership potential and the most suitable model for execution. Officials are also mapping existing road patterns, available right-of-way (ROW), and urban development zones to ensure minimal disruption and maximum accessibility.

According to the Comprehensive Mobility Plan, the corridor is expected to handle a PHPDT of around 5,600 by 2031, rising to 8,050 by 2041, and 11,800 by 2054. Daily ridership is projected to increase from 65,000 in 2031 to 91,000 in 2041 and 147,000 by 2054, reflecting a growing reliance on mass rapid transit in the city.

The feasibility study will also review financial models and funding mechanisms, along with options for seamless transfers, last-mile connectivity, and integration with existing public transport systems such as city buses and feeder services. Once completed, the study will form the basis of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for approval by state and central authorities.

The proposed route will start from Kasturchand Park station, including a 3 km underground stretch through the city's dense core with multiple flyovers and limited ROW, before transitioning to an elevated corridor. Around 10 metro stations are planned along the route to ensure accessibility and convenience. The tentative project cost is pegged at around INR 3,500 crore, based on prevailing metro construction benchmarks of INR 300 crore per km, with final costs to be determined after DPR completion.
